Description

This handmade Katakuchi (片口) vessel was fired in an Anagama wood kiln. Its rounded, generous body is complemented by a small pouring lip formed on one side, while a raised foot provides stability.

Katakuchi – tradicinis japoniškas indas, kurio pavadinimas pažodžiui reiškia „vienpusė anga“: kata (片) – viena pusė, kuchi Katakuchi is a traditional Japanese vessel whose name literally means “one-sided opening”: kata (片) means “one side,” while kuchi (口) means “mouth” or “opening.” The defining feature of the form is a pouring lip on one side of the vessel, allowing liquids to be poured neatly and with control.

In Japan, Katakuchi vessels are used for a wide variety of purposes, including pouring sake, sauces, dressings and broths, as well as serving small portions. Wider Katakuchi forms can also be used for preparing Matcha: the tea is whisked in the vessel and then poured through the spout into smaller cups.

The surface of this piece combines warm brown, sandy and muted grey tones. One side reveals a lighter area of ash and flowing glaze, while the opposite side carries deeper earthy browns. These variations developed during the Anagama firing as flame and wood ash affected different areas of the vessel with varying intensity.

Visible wheel-thrown lines and subtle surface irregularities preserve a direct connection to the making and firing process. As the vessel is turned, its appearance shifts from lighter ash-glazed areas to darker sections more strongly marked by flame.
