Description
“Bud” is a ceramic sculpture whose form evokes a flower or plant just before it opens. Several rising planes lean and fold towards one another, creating a sense of concentration and inner tension – as if the form had been captured at the moment just before unfolding.
Soft convex curves meet sharply defined angular edges, while the silhouette, internal openings and interplay of light and shadow change as the sculpture is viewed from different angles. Compact yet monumental, the work has a strong spatial presence.
Deep earthy browns, smoky greys and warm ochre tones move across the surface. In some areas, naturally formed ash glaze introduces a subtle glass-like quality, while elsewhere the surface remains matte, rugged and mineral. These variations reinforce the sculpture’s elemental, almost geological character.
The sculpture was fired for more than 100 hours in an Anagama kiln, with no glaze applied beforehand. During the prolonged wood firing, flame and wood ash naturally shaped the surface colours, ash glaze and individual fire marks. These processes give the work a singular character that can never be reproduced in exactly the same way.

“Bud” can stand as an independent focal point within an interior, gallery or collection. Its concentrated form and motif of emergence evoke growth, latent energy and the moment immediately before transformation.
