Description

This handmade cup is distinguished by its softly rounded form, subtly irregular rim and calm, tactile surface. Deep brown and charcoal tones contrast with a warm ochre and golden band of naturally formed ash glaze that seems to wrap around one side of the vessel. The interplay between matte and more glass-like areas gives the piece visual depth and vitality.

Its form reflects the natural irregularity and subtle asymmetry associated with the wabi-sabi aesthetic, where traces of the hand, material and fire are valued rather than perfect uniformity.

The cup was fired for more than 100 hours in an Anagama wood-fired high-temperature kiln, with no glaze applied beforehand. During the long firing, flame and wood ash naturally formed the ash glaze, colour transitions and individual fire marks. These processes give the piece a singular character that can never be reproduced in exactly the same way.
