Description
This handmade Chawan tea cup was created in the spirit of the Japanese wabi-sabi aesthetic, which values naturalness, asymmetry, and the traces left by material and fire.
Wan-nari is a traditional Chawan form characterised by a gently rounded body, smoothly rising sides, and balanced proportions. A small raised foot gives the cup stability, while the open rim provides ample space for whisking Matcha with a bamboo chasen.
The surface combines soft sandy, creamy, and warm brown tones crossed by a darker smoky band. Fine ash speckling and irregular colour transitions developed during the Anagama firing, as flame and wood ash affected each area of the cup differently. One side remains lighter, while another reveals deeper grey and brown markings, so the appearance changes as the cup is turned.
The interior has a warmer sandy-brown tone, providing a beautiful background for the vivid green colour of prepared Matcha. The rounded Wan-nari form is comfortable to hold in both hands and is suitable both for everyday Matcha preparation and for a slower, more attentive tea ritual.
