Description
This handmade Chawan tea cup was created in the spirit of the Japanese wabi-sabi aesthetic, which values naturalness, asymmetry, and the traces left by material and fire.
Wan-nari is a traditional Chawan form characterised by a gently rounded body, smoothly rising sides, and balanced proportions. This cup has a relatively deep, compact profile, while the small raised foot provides stability. Its open rim leaves ample room for whisking Matcha with a bamboo chasen.
Deep charcoal, smoky grey and dark earthy brown tones dominate the exterior. One side reveals a lighter area of ash deposition, while a warm golden-brown band of natural ash glaze has formed around the rim and flows slightly into the interior. These variations developed during the Anagama firing as flame and wood ash affected different areas of the cup with varying intensity.
The interior is predominantly warm dark brown, with visible glaze transitions around the rim recording the movement and melting of ash at high temperature. As the cup is turned, different firing marks and surface patterns become visible.
The rounded Wan-nari form is comfortable to hold in both hands and is well suited to preparing Matcha and enjoying a slower tea ritual.
