Description

This handmade Katakuchi (片口) vessel was fired in an Anagama wood kiln. Its compact rounded body and pouring lip formed on one side of the rim make it particularly suitable for preparing Matcha and pouring it into smaller cups.

Katakuchi is a traditional Japanese vessel whose name literally means “one-sided opening”: kata (片) means “one side,” while kuchi (口) means “mouth” or “opening.” The defining feature is a pouring lip on one side of the vessel. Katakuchi are used for sake, tea, sauces and other liquids, while wider forms are especially practical for Matcha preparation—the tea can be whisked directly in the vessel and then poured neatly into cups.

The surface combines warm brown, sandy and creamy tones. One side carries a deeper earthy brown colour, while the other is lighter with a more pronounced ash-glazed surface. Inside, warm golden-brown tones are scattered with fine firing speckles. As the vessel is turned, the changing distribution of colour and glaze becomes clearly visible.

Anagamos degimo metu liepsna, medžio pelenai ir aukšta temperatūra nevienodai veikė skirtingas indo dalis, todėl paviršiaus perėjimai ir faktūros susiformavo tiesiog krosnyje.

Height: 7,5 cm
Diameter 10,5 cm

During the Anagama firing, flame, wood ash and high temperature affected different areas of the vessel unevenly, creating the surface transitions and textures directly in the kiln.
