Description
Katakuchi (片口) is a traditional Japanese vessel whose name literally means “one-sided mouth.” Its defining feature is a wide opening with a small pouring lip or spout formed on one side.
This Katakuchi has a rounded body, gently flared rim and a small raised foot. Its warm creamy, sandy and soft brown glaze varies naturally across the surface, creating subtle colour transitions, glaze runs and firing marks. Each side of the vessel reveals slightly different details.
In Japan, Katakuchi vessels have traditionally served many purposes. They can be used for serving and pouring sake, for whisking Matcha directly in the vessel and then pouring it into smaller cups, or for serving sauces, dressings, broths, condiments and small portions of food.
The wide opening provides ample room for a bamboo Matcha whisk, while the pouring lip allows the prepared tea to be transferred neatly and accurately. This versatility makes the Katakuchi suitable for both tea rituals and everyday table use.
