Description

This handmade Katakuchi (片口) bowl was fired in an Anagama wood kiln. The traditional Japanese Katakuchi form is defined by a small pouring lip on one side of the rim, allowing liquids to be poured cleanly and precisely. Its rounded body, open mouth and gently elevated foot create a balanced silhouette that is both functional and elegant.

The word Katakuchi literally means “one-sided opening” or “single spout.” In Japan, this form has long been used as a versatile pouring bowl for many purposes: serving tea, sake, sauces, broths or small dishes, and also as a vessel for preparing matcha, where the tea can be whisked and then poured neatly into cups.

This particular Katakuchi features a calm, natural surface with transitions between warm clay brown, sandy beige, creamy ash-glazed tones and deeper smoky areas. One side appears darker and more concentrated, while the other carries a lighter veil of ash glaze. These variations were formed naturally during firing, as flame, wood ash and kiln atmosphere interacted differently across the vessel.

Visible wheel-thrown lines emphasize the handmade character of the piece, while the restrained, organic form reflects a wabi-sabi sensibility—an appreciation of simplicity, naturalness and the unrepeatable marks left by process and material.

With its open shape and practical pouring lip, this bowl works beautifully as both a functional everyday object and a refined serving piece. It is suitable for preparing matcha, pouring sauces or broths, serving small portions, or simply displaying as a quiet ceramic accent.
