Description
“Deer” is a sculptural ceramic vase with a compact form and a distinct animal-like presence. Subtly articulated supports, a softly rising body and an asymmetrically opening rim evoke the alert posture of a woodland creature. Rounded organic contours are contrasted by a more sharply defined plane, introducing tension and individuality to the form.
Warm ochre, muted gold, earthy brown, smoky and deep charcoal tones move across the surface. Naturally formed ash glaze becomes more glass-like in some areas, while elsewhere the surface remains matte, granular and mineral. These shifts in colour and texture reinforce the vase’s sculptural character and allow each side to reveal a different expression.
The vase was fired for more than 100 hours in an Anagama kiln, with no glaze applied beforehand. During the prolonged wood firing, flame and wood ash naturally shaped the surface colours, ash glaze and individual fire marks. These processes give the piece a singular character that can never be reproduced in exactly the same way.
Height: 30 cm
“Deer” can function as a vase, while its expressive silhouette and richly varied surface also allow it to stand as an independent sculptural object. The piece can become a subtle yet distinctive focal point within an interior or collection.
