Description
This rounded stoneware tea cup is wheel-thrown from German clay with granite inclusions. Its wide opening and small raised foot give the cup balanced proportions, while the handleless form makes it comfortable to hold in both hands.
The surface is dominated by deep graphite, charcoal and smoky grey tones created by the combination of black engobe and ash glaze. Lighter areas of ash glaze appear in places, together with speckling from the granite inclusions. At high temperature, the clay, engobe, glaze and mineral inclusions interact, creating subtle variations in colour and texture across the surface.
The cup was wood-fired for 12 hours at 1300 °C. During the firing, wood ash settled onto the surface and reacted with the clay and minerals at high temperature. The final appearance is influenced by the direction of the flame, the amount of ash, the cup’s position in the kiln and the firing atmosphere, making the resulting surface impossible to reproduce exactly.
Height: 8 cm
Diameter 12 cm
The cup is suitable for tea and other hot drinks. Its handleless form encourages it to be filled approximately one-third full and held in both hands, inviting a slower and more attentive way of enjoying tea.
