Description

This handmade porcelain Chawan is distinguished by its wide, open form, gently rising walls and subtly raised foot. The light porcelain body provides a refined background for warm creamy, ochre and golden tones, while traces of natural ash bring depth, variation and a delicate luminosity to the surface.

Its generous proportions reflect the Chawan tradition: the vessel rests naturally in both hands, while the open interior provides ample space for the bamboo chasen whisk to move freely when preparing matcha. Subtle asymmetry and natural surface variations reflect the wabi-sabi aesthetic, where the individual traces of material, hand and fire are valued.

The Chawan was fired for more than 100 hours in the Dūkštos Anagama, with no glaze applied beforehand. During the long firing, flame and wood ash interacted directly with the porcelain surface, naturally forming ash glaze, gentle colour transitions and individual yohen marks. These processes give the piece a singular character that can never be reproduced in exactly the same way.

Height: 7 cm
Diameter: 16,5 cm

Designed for matcha and a slow, attentive tea ritual. Its luminous porcelain body, refined form and surface shaped by the Anagama firing also allow the Chawan to be appreciated as a collectible work of ceramic art.
